Why this essay belongs in WORD DRIFT
A false word-origin story rarely spreads because people hate evidence. It spreads because the alternative story is shorter, cleaner, more moral, or more memorable than the archive. A visible split, a tidy classroom mnemonic, one vivid intermediate stage, or a present-day argument disguised as root truth can all travel faster than chronology. The archive matters because it restores sequence, uncertainty, and transmission where the clean story pretends to be the whole.
This is a word-history essay, not a partisan decoding trick. The point is to notice how historical layers of meaning affect modern judgment without pretending every contested term hides a secret plot.
