Why this essay belongs in WORD DRIFT
Software did not invent a transparent vocabulary for itself. It borrowed the world. Screens became windows, systems became portals, layouts became desktops, discussion spaces became forums, trackers became cookies, and automated procedure borrowed the dignity of algorithm and avatar. That borrowed language helps modern systems feel navigable, humane, and inevitable before the user has really grasped what the system is doing.
This is a word-history essay, not a partisan decoding trick. The point is to notice how historical layers of meaning affect modern judgment without pretending every contested term hides a secret plot.
