Why this essay belongs in WORD DRIFT
Secular English is full of sacred leftovers. The older altar, spirit, or divine frame may recede, but the intensity often survives. What remains is not empty metaphor. It is transferred charge: reverence becoming praise, possession becoming energy, gift becoming charisma, and incarnation becoming interface presence.
This is a word-history essay, not a partisan decoding trick. The point is to notice how historical layers of meaning affect modern judgment without pretending every contested term hides a secret plot.
